    Help with identification

I took this photo on a trip off the Auckland Islands, New Zealand and only recently took any notice of it. Any ideas?

It looks to me like a Prycroft or Cook's, but the underwing doesn't seem to have enough black on it. It could be a Broad-billed Prion with the underwing, but there looks like too much white on the face.

For an idea of size, this is the full frame of the image and it was shot at 165mm

    Hi Brook,

To me this bird with its square head, stuck-on bill and relatively short wings looks more like a prion than a Cookilaria of any kind. Unfortunately, from this perspective I can't really say which prion it is.

    Cheers,

    Nikolas

I agree it is a prion, not a Cookilaria. Added to Nikolas' reasons are the lack of any border on the underwng, the large collar, and the apparent dark tip to the underside of the tail

Yeah, definitely a prion for me, that face does look rather white, but it would be hard to definitively say which species.
