• Japan refuses to make seabird bycatch mitigation measures mandatory

    In spite of a 300% increase in the number of seabirds killed in 2013 in the Japanese Southern Bluefin Tuna fishery, Japan has vetoed the decision by the commission to introduce mandatory measures, citing "significant burdens and difficulties for fishermen". Currently bycatch mitigation measures are voluntary and the commission was calling for 2 of the 3 available prevention measures to be made mandatory. Further information can be found here
