• 26th February 2011, SOSSA PELAGIC TRIP, WOLLONGONG, NSW, AUSTRALIA

    Report prepared by: Graham Barwell.

    We went out to 34° 22' 02" S; 151° 23' 45" E, 45 km E of the harbour in
pelagic waters, where we stopped for a bit over half an hour,
11.30-12.00, before turning back in. The water temp. was 23.8° about
13 km E of the harbour and a degree higher at 24.8° in pelagic
waters. Where I haven't given an estimate of the numbers seen, it
means the birds were relatively numerous.

    2 Black-browed Albatross (adult. & imm.)
2 Shy Albatross (adult & imm.)
    Wedge-tailed Shearwater
    Flesh-footed Shearwater
    3 Sooty Shearwater
    Short-tailed Shearwater
1 Streaked Shearwater (seen about 9 km E of the harbour in inshore
waters; flew past and did not come in to the boat)
    1 Fluttering Shearwater
    5 Hutton's Shearwater
    c. 20 Great-winged Petrel
    c. 12 Australasian Gannet
    c. 20 Pomarine Jaeger
1 Arctic Jaeger (called as this species but too far off for me to be
    certain of its identity)
    7 Long-tailed Jaeger
    1 Sooty Tern
    Crested Tern
    2 Kelp Gull
    Silver Gull

There was also a poor sighting of a cetacean sp., but not at all clear what it was.
